Chief Harold Sappier

The late Harold Sappier is the longest reigning Chief in the history of St. Mary's. He served 20 years at Chief and four years as Councilor. During Chief Sappier's term, he established the Band Office, Fiddlehead Festival and was the founding member of the Union of New Brunswick Indians.

During Chief Sappiers Term, St. Mary's was the first and only reserve in New Brunswick to make use of city services, such as ambulance, fire, ect. St. Mary's was also the only reserve to have trained and qualified police officers to work both on and off reserve. In 1976, Chief Sappier had the honor of meeting the Queen of England.

Chief Sappier is looked upon and respected as a man with strong traditional values. He always had a deep concern for his people and spent much time looking for ways to help them.

The Chief Harold Sappier Memorial Elementary School was the dream of the late Chief Harold Sappier and we honor his memory by the dedication of his name to this school.
